New Fiesta Falls For Sun Trap

Wednesday 29th June 2005

There's no time for a siesta when you're developing the Fiesta! The mag's spies caught Ford engineers napping after they left a virtually undisguised car parked up on a sunny afternoon. The pics reveal just how the blue oval's baby will look when it debuts at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Worried by the arrival of more radically styled challengers later this year - such as the Vauxhall Corsa and Renault's Clio - Ford has heavily face-lifted the Fiesta. The idea was to create a more youthful look; the bold new headlights, complete with large circular lamps and raised pods for the sidelights, dominate the front end.

Revised upper and lower mesh grilles boost the sharper look, while restyled tail-lights, a smoother boot and revised bumpers finish the rear. New alloys will be fitted to production models.

The biggest changes, however, are inside. Stung by criticism of the current model, Ford is taking the Fiesta upmarket with a new Focus-like dash.

On the mechanical side, engineers have left the suspension unchanged, while the line-up of Studio, Style, Zetec, Ghia and Zetec S trims is also carried over. Only the hot hatch ST won't benefit from the exterior updates, but it does get the new cabin. Sales of the new Fiesta start in November and, although prices haven't been released, expect the range to start at around £8,750 - £500 more than at present.

Meanwhile, Ford has announced the Sport Activity Vehicle concept will be built. First revealed at the Geneva Show in March, the people carrier will hit the UK early next year and sit below the Galaxy.
