Under Pressure A question we always get asked is “Which oil?” At PJ Motorsport, we recommend Mobil 1 Motorsport 15/50 or Castrol RS 10/60. Both companies offer thinner versions of both products, but they are SAE 0-40 and offer poor protection at high temperature, because they are thinner. Consequently, this creates poor oil pressure and less engine protection. Only Ford and Cosworth would design such a fine engine with such large clearances based on the Cortina Pinto engine! Minimum oil pressures are 1.8 bar at idle (850-900 rpm) and 2.4 bar at 2000 rpm. Both these pressures are at an oil temperature of 80°C and with a 50 multi grade oil. Remember – if you are rebuilding your engine, we can supply you with an uprated oil pump with a stronger pressure relief spring, fitted by ourselves, to give you extra pressure. Oil Additives At PJ Motorsport, we do not recommend the use of oil additives, as using the correct oil initially is safer. We strongly do not recommend the use of Slick 50-type products themselves to engine parts, as the oil galleries in the turbo are small, and this type of product could create a restriction and ultimately premature turbo bearing failure.
